Opened in 1960, the Colburn Earth Science Museum was created to display the fascinating collection of rare gemstones, minerals and crystals amassed by engineer Burnham S. Colburn. Because of its proximity to North Carolina's mineral fields, Colburn chose Asheville as the home to his Southern Appalachian Mineral Society. In addition to this exquisite collection, the museum also chronicles the history of North Carolina mining and the effects weather has had on the geology in the area. The museum is located in downtown Asheville’s Pack Place Education, Arts & Science Center on historic Pack Square.
