The North Carolina Arboretum contains 434 acres of rich and colorful gardens and forests, bringing into one small area all the diversity and natural beauty of the state. Explore the trees of the state along the cool, shaded Canopy Walk or tour the Heritage Garden, where plants central in Southern Appalachian culture, craft and horticulture are displayed. The Quilt Garden offers an intriguing version of this old world craft, using plants instead of cloth to create vivid patchwork patterns. Don't miss the indoor educational and art exhibits either, and stop by the Garden Trellis cafe for a midday bite to eat. Set just beside the Bent Creek Experimental Forest, the arboretum also has some 10 miles of forested hiking trails to explore.
